Photography/Photoshop Unit
Working with a partner or in a small group, this activity challenges students to combine photographs to create an imaginary classmate. In addition to their understanding of photo manipulation, students check out the concept of photocollage, the combining of multiple pictures into a single image. To accomplish their task, students begin by using mechanical techniques to combine the group's faces into possible "imaginary friends." The eyes of one student combined with the lips of another and the nose of yet another are used to create a new face. Students may explore numerous possibilities. The group then uses digital techniques (using Photoshop) to create the final portraits of their "new friends". Though the final work(s) is/are to be a new creation, it is important that each member of the group be able to find himself/herself within the "new friend(s)". Each student is responsible for producing a unique portrait.
